Hoy os cuento unas bonitas leyendas del norte de la provincia de Gerona, entre los Pirineos y el mar Mediterráneo. La imaginación popular ha identificado las ruinas del castillo de Verdera con el Montsalvat de Wagner, es decir con el castillo del Santo Grial. Y, otro castillo cercano, el de Quermançó, con la fortaleza de Klingsor. Hay mucha información en internet.

Today I have a beautiful legend related to the Spanish province of Gerona, located between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean sea. Popular imagination has it that the ruins of the Castle of Verdera correspond to Wagner’s Montsalvat, or Castle of the Holy Grail. And, that another neighbouring castle, Quermançó, was Klingsor’s fortress. There is a lot of information on the web.

Estimado Juan:
Hace algún tiempo, le había enviado información referida a la adaptación danzada de la leyenda de los caballeros de la Tabla redonda por la compañía de danza de Ethery Pagava.
Ahora acabo de descubrir que la misma artista ha estrenado este año otro ballet sobre el rey Arturo.
Me llama mucho la atención que esta artista vuleva con tanta frecuencia a los temas de la materia de Bretaña y afines, pues tiene en repertorio otras obras con Melusina y con la Reina de las nieves como protagonistas.
Creo que un estudio de esas adaptaciones modernas podría ser interesante para futuros investigaciones del grupo Clytiar.

Ya os dije que habría alguna sorpresa respecto al libro. Aquí va la primera.

Como ya os dije cuando incluimos el texto portugués de Ana Margarida, parecía una buena cosa tratar de convertir el libro en un trabajo totalmente hispánico o ibérico. Por ello aquí tenemos una aportación catalana. Os explico un poco el contexto.

Alexandre de Riquer fue un poeta y artista modernista catalán. Entre sus obras de poesía figura su obra magna, El poema del Bosch, de 1910. Se trata de un gran poema en diez cantos que habla del bosque en todas las tradiciones culturales. El canto VIII se llama «Escalibor» y es la parte que dedica al bosque y a la tradición artúrica. Este libro nunca se ha vuelto a editar, ni por supuesto traducir a ninguna lengua. Es uno de tantos grandes textos olvidados. Lo que aquí tenéis es una introducción, la publicación del canto VIII (no se ha vuelto a publicar desde 1910), una traducción métrica al español, y otra la francés. Todos los implicados son o han sido profesores de la venerable Universitat de Barcelona.

Y un dato curioso. Isabel de Riquer, a la que muchos conoceréis por sus libros artúricos y de temática medieval, es hija del magno Martín de Riquer y nieta o biznieta (no estoy seguro) del Alexandre de Riquer, nuestro poeta modernista.

Creo que será un capítulo muy chulo.

I told you that there will be some surprises related to our book. Here you have the first one.

Since the moment we included a Portuguese chapter by Ana Margarida, I though that it would be great to turn the book into a real pan-Hispanic or Iberian product. And this is the Catalan contribution. I will give some context right now.

Alexandre de Riquer was a very representative poet and artist belonging to the so-called Catalan Modernist (Remember Antoni Gaudi?). His opus magnum was El poema del Bosch [The Poem of the Wood], published in 1910. It is a very long poem in ten cantos dealing with the wood in all cultural traditions. Canto VIII is called «Escalibor» and it is about the wood in the Arthurian tradition. This book has never been published again or translated into any language. It another example of the endless number of neglected texts. What you have here is an introduction, the original canto VIII (Catalan), second time that it will be published, a metrical translation into Spanish, and another metrical one into French. All participants are, or have been, professors at the venerable Universitat de Barcelona.

And a curiosity. Isabel de Riquer, very well-known for her Arthurian and medivalist books, is a daughter of the grear Martín de Riquer, and granddaughter or great-granddaughter (I am not sure) of Alexandre de Riquer himself, our Catalan modernist poet.

A very cool chapter indeed, isn’t it?

Our colleague Alma has sent me this proposal for naming the book. It is a very smart combination of the best of the Arthurian tradition with a nod to the present harsh economic condition. If you like it, we can accept it. Of course, more proposals are welcome. We’ll vote.
This is what Alma’s messase says [my translation]:

Hello Juan,
It is difficult to find a title that matches the universal cuttings we are suffering in this country (Spain) during the edition process of our book. A very good name could be «Trencavel», which is the true meaning of Parsifal. Indeed, «Trenca» means «cortar» (cut) in Occitanian, and «vel», or «bel», is «bien» (well). Wolfram wrote in his Parzival that Trencavel (translated into the German of his times) was the character’s «true» name.

I know many of you know it already, as members of different national branches of the IAS, but here you have the first announcement of the next International Arthurian Conference that will take place in Bucarest in 2014. But for many of you it is totally new, I guess. I hope you can all participate in this event.

Again, remember to update you Clytiar CVs.

And, we need a name for the book that we are preparing. As you can see in our page, the previous ones were called: Cuaderno de Camelot, Avalón, Montsalvat, Corbenic, Tintagel and Almesbury. Any suggestions?

Espero que hayáis tenido un estupendo verano, aunque el verano no ha terminado todavía. Oficialmente dura hasta finales de septiembre. Sigue la fiesta. Y, por supuesto, un buen retorno a las actividades más habituales.

Creo que este es un buen momento para recordaros, en primer lugar, que actualicéis vuestros currículos de la página de Clytiar. También quiero recomendaros un libro que he descubierto hace poco sobre la materia de Bretaña ibérica. Me ha parecido muy bueno. Está en francés. Mirad el adjunto.

Y respecto a nuestro libro, no desanimarse. Aparte de las dos traducciones, tenemos cuatro artículos terminados. Y siete en camino (muy avanzados). Aparte de dos sorpresas que ya os comentaré más adelante. Espero que ya no dentro de mucho esté en la imprenta.

I hope you all had a wonderfull summer. However, according to calendars summertime will not be over until the end of September. So some extra time yet to enjoy. Of course, the best for your comebacks to normal life. It is not so bad.

This is also the right moment to remind you to update your Clytiar webpage CVs. I also want to highly recommend you a book on Iberian Arthurian that I have just discovered. I think that it is excellent. Written in French. See attachment.

And what about our book. Don ́t worry. We already have the two translations, four finished chapters, and another seven ones in process. I guess that they will bear fruit very soon. Additionally, there will be two surprises, but it is still too early to spread the news. Conclusion, I hope that the book will be soon brought to the print.
