Ayer me llegaron noticias de la traducción al inglés de la novela de caballerías escrita en catalán Curial e Güelfa del siglo XV. Ved más información en el adjunto.

No se trata de una novela artúrica, pero sí con muchos elementos que sí lo son. William J. Entwistle en su clásico The Arthurian Legend in the Literatures of the Spanish Peninsula (London: Dent, 1925), resalta el siguiente pasaje de la novela que menciona la labor de traducción de los romances franceses al catalán: «Empero yo vull seguir la manera daquells cathalans qui trasladaren los libres de Tristany e de Lançalot, e tornaren los de lengua francesa en lengua catalana» (86).

Yesterday I received information about the first translation into English of the 15th century romance of knighthood, Curial e Güelfa. More info in the attachment.

It is not an Arthurian novel, but it displays many Arthurian elements. William J. Entwistle’s classic manual The Arthurian Legend in the Literatures of the Spanish Peninsula (London: Dent 1925), quotes a passage from the novel that proves that French Arthurian romances were translated into Catalan and that the author of the Curial and Guelfa used them as models: «Empero yo vull seguir la manera daquells cathalans qui trasladaren los libres de Tristany e de Lançalot, e tornaren los de lengua francesa en lengua catalana» [But I want to follow the ways of those Catalans who translated the books of Tristan and Lancelot, and turned them from French into Catalan] (86).

1. Curial and Guelfa

Hola a todos:

Como ya os anuncié, el fin de semana pasado fue a ver la película: «El Capitán Trueno y el Santo Grial». Yo pasé un rato muy entretenido, aunque a mí no era muy difícil contentarme. La película, en mi modesta opinión, no es perfecta en absoluto, pero tiene cosas buenas.

La película comienza con un ambiente de Cruzadas en Palestina. Parecido al The Talisman de Walter Scott. Incluso sale Ricardo Corazón de León. Luego la acción se traslada a España y pasan muchas cosas debido a que hay que defender el Santo Grial de los malos.

Cosas buenas:
– La fotografía. Preciosos paisajes. Incluido castillos.
– La música. Agradable.
– La acción. Para quien le guste.
– Efectos especiales. Lo intenta y no están mal.
– La película se ha hecho con bastantes medios y lucen bastante.

Cosas malas:
– El guión. Es muy pobre. Intenta meter demasiadas cosas y se pierde muy a menudo. Una pena.
– Los actores. Son muy guapos y muy sexis, pero les falta mucho. La chica rusa que hace de Sigrid es un buen ejemplo: guapísima, pero…
– Montones de magia. Me parece que se han pasado.

Hello everybody:

As I told you, last weekend I went to the cinema to see the movie: «El Capitán Trueno y el Santo Grial». I had a lot of fun, but I was easy to please. In my opinion, this is not an excellent movie, but it has some good points.

The movie starts in the Holy Land in the times of the Third Crusade. It reminded me of Walter Scott and The Talisman. Richard Lionheart himself appears briefly. Then the leading characters move to Spain where many things happen in order to prevent the baddies from getting hold of the Holy Grail to use it for their evil purposes.

Good things:
– The photography. Very beautiful scenery, castles included.
– The music, very pleasant to hear.
– A lot of action (battles and so on). Good for this kind of movie.
– Special effects. They try hard and they frequently make it.
– It is not a low budget film at all, and you can see it clearly.

Bad things:
– The screenplay. It is very poor. Two many things and subplots. You get lost. It is a pity.
– The actors and actresses. Very handsome/beautiful and sexy, but they still have to learn one lesson or two about acting. The Russian girl who plays the role of Sigrid is a good example of this: very beautiful indeed but…
– Lots of magic. I really think that they overdid it.

Hola a todos:

Os envío en primer artículo revisado ya para el futuro libro de Clytiar. Se trata del trabajo de Rosalba Lendo. Os ruego que según lo acordado, si al leerlo observáis alguna posibilidad de mejora, no dudéis indicármelo, para hacérselo saber a Rosalba, por supuesto de forma anónima.

Llevó un gran retraso pues el nuevo curso me está absorbiendo, entre otras cosas, pero pronto enviaré las revisiones y comentarios de los otros artículos que he recibido hasta la fecha. Las personas que todavía no me han indicado nada, os ruego me hagáis saber si todavía queréis participar.

I have attached the first revised article for our Clytiar book. It is Rosalba Lendo’s chapter. Please, as agreed, read it and if you can make any suggestions to improve it, do not hesitate to tell me. I will pass the comments to Rosalba anonymously.

I am having a very hard beginning of the academic year, but I hope that I will be able to carch up soon and send my preliminary comments to all of you that have sent me your texts so far. Hola a todos:

No sé si lo sabréis ya, pero hace una semana más o menos se ha estrenado en España una película sobre el Capitán Trueno. La primera que se hace el mítico tebeo español. Es muy curioso pues el título completo de la película es: Capitán Trueno y el Santo Grial. Es decir, además de ser una versión de las aventuras del caballero, han convertido la historia en una película del Grial, que es un tema tan de moda. Además también es una película de vikingos pues Sigrid, la novia del Capitán es una vikinga emigrada a España. Es decir, todo un cóctel.

Yo no sé si la película será muy buena o no. La veré este fin de semana. Lo que no se puede negar es que es un acontecimiento. Que yo sepa la quinta película española de temática (más o menos) artúrica. Ya os contaré la semana próxima qué me ha parecido. De momento mirad el adjunto.

Dear all,

You may know it already, but last week a Spanish movie on Capitán Trueno was released. It is the first cinematic version of the mythical Spanish comic. The full title of the movie is very curious: Captain Trueno and the Holy Grail. In other words, they have not only turned it into a visual version of the knights’ adventures, but a Holy Grail movie too, which is something very fashionable at the moment. Additionally, it is a viking movie as Sigrid, Captain’s girlfriend, is a Viking expatriate in Spain. To sum up, what a cocktail!

I have not seen it yet. I will try to do it this coming weekend. It may be a good or a bad one, but you can deny that it is a great event. As far as I know it is only the fifth (more or less) Arthurian Spanish movie. I will tell you my impressions next week. Right now, please, open the attachment.

Una gran noticia artúrica. La editorial Planeta, la más grande del mundo Hispánico, ha comenzado a publicar de nuevo todo el Príncipe Valiente. Se venderá en todos los kioskos de España, entre otros puntos de distribución. Los que estáis en España puede que ya lo sepáis pues se ha anunciado en varias televisiones españolas a nivel nacional. Se trata de una nueva traducción de lo que ya ha sido publicado en español, y de una traducción por primera vez de lo que no se ha publicado hasta ahora. Cuando digo todo el cómic de Príncipe Valiente, quiero decir «realmente todo». Desde 1937 hasta 2011. Se publicará un volumen por cada año. En total: 74 volúmenes. Por supuesto, la parte de Hal Forster y la de sus continuadores.

Yo participo también en el proyecto. Cada volumen tendrá una pequeña introducción. A mí me han encargado cinco introducciones. Aparte, me ha tocado traducir los volúmenes de 1995, 1996 y 1997. Estos son de John Cullen Murphy. Si estáis interesados, no olvidéis hacer vuestra reserva.

A great Arthurian scoop. Planeta, the leader publisher in Spanish, has started publishing all Prince Valiant again. It will be distributed in all Spanish newspapers shops among other distribution centers. If you are in Spain you may be aware of it, as many national television channels are advertasing it at the moment. It is a new translation of all materials previously translated into Spanish, and first time translations for the rest of the materials. When I say all Prince Valiant, I really mean all. From 1937 to 2011. In other words, 74 volumes, each covering each publication year. Of course, those parts that Hal Forster did, and those that were done by his continuators.

I am also part of the project. Every volume will have a short introduction. I will write five introductions. Additionally, I have been entrusted the translation of the 1995, 1996 and 1997 volumes. These ones belong to John Cullen Murphy (a reputed continuator). If you are interested, make your reservation.
