TESIS DOCTORAL
[1996] The Matter of Merlín: Manifestations of the Enchanter & El baladro del sabio Merlín
Director: Edward Dudley — Outside Reader: Harvey L. Sharrer, UC Sta. Barbara
Distinguishes the late fifteenth-century Post-Vulgate refundición and its title figura from their sources, from Celtic myth and English chronicle to French romance. Explores Arthurian literature, lore and philology on the Peninsula, Merlin’s appearance in the Cantigas de Santa Maria, the influence of Merlinian prophetic tradition in Golden Age poetry, and links between the Hispanic Baladro and the novela sentimental. Reading in historical context contrasts meanings associated with the Crusades, the Inquisition and the Age of Discovery & Conquest.
BECAS DE INVESTIGACIÓN
[1995] Universidad de Oviedo; funded by Mark Diamond Foundation, SUNY Buffalo. Enabled thesis-related study of the unique Burgos incunable exemplar, basic to this first dissertation focused on the Baladro. Photographs of original woodcuts taken by permission.
DOCENCIA UNIVERSITARIA
[2001- ] BUFFALO STATE COLLEGE: Assistant Professor, Fall, 2001 – Present
Original Seminars
Spanish 404: «Cervantes»: Focus on Don Quijote. The course is focused on guided close readings of Cervantes’s most famous work. However it also addresses the author’s biography, an overview of his literary production and its literary and historical context. Aspects central to our approach are hypertextuality (and other forms of intertextuality), genre distinctions, and integrated themes such as dualism, truth and fiction, honor, courtly love and sanity versus madness.
Spanish 497, Senior Seminar — “Don Quixote’s Library”: Sample readings from works named as constituents of the infamous library are coordinated with key chapters and passages from the Quijote. Although the generic focal point is the books of chivalry, a variety of genres, discourses and media are considered. The latest course revision reads from an emphasized view of censure and politics, including pointed issues shared by Cervantes’s and our time connected with Islam.
